Many fish species release their eggs into the water column and these then hatch into larvae. Such pelagic fish eggs and larvae are collectively known as ichthyoplankton.
Fish larvae undergo gradual changes with growth until they develop their full fin complement, by which stage they have better swimming ability and leave the plankton community to become nekton instead.
